Press Release 2-26-02

Announcement from Ken Rosskopf, director, Decatur Yellow Bikes.

Decatur Yellow Bikes has a new exciting program to make bike transportation easier. We are offering free bikes to Decatur residents. It is our Adopt-A-Bike program.

The goal of the Adopt-A-Bike program is to increase the use of Decatur Yellow Bikes as a transportation alternative; to increase the visibility of Decatur Yellow Bikes; to make Yellow Bikes available to those who can't find them in DYB Stations; to reduce theft and vandalism by allowing people to take and keep yellow bikes for a six month period. The program will supplement our ongoing ride and return bike program. The beauty of an adopted bike is that you can keep it ready for use. It doesn't need to be indoors. It doesn't need to be locked. It can be kept at your back door, ready to ride. It makes those short trips to the market, to the gym, or to the Square, fast, simple and fun. AND IT'S FREE. Adopting a bike is quick. Meet Ken at Yellow Bike HQ any Thursday evening between 7 and 9, or Saturday morning between 10 and Noon, pick out your bike, make your refundable $25 deposit, and sign the pledge to ride.. After we paint your bike you can pick it up or we will deliver.
The user will sign a pledge to try to use the bike three times per week instead of a motor vehicle. Some examples:

1. Grocery
2. Hardware
3. Shopping
4. Restaurant
5. Coffee shop
f. Errands
g. Visiting neighbors
h. Trips to school
i. Haircuts
j. Trips to MARTA

DYB will perform maintenance and repairs on the bike at no expense to user at DYB headquarters.
